Canadian Artillery Militia Buttons
1868 - 1870's

This button has always presented a problemn of dating and location. I found an obscure article on when the British Army left Canada. Part of the article stated ... "With Confederation in place and the British Garrison gone, Canada assumed full responsibilityfor it's own defence. It immediately passed the Federal Militia Act in 1868. Two small professional batteries of Militia Artillery were established in Quebec City and Kingston.

I also had an interesting E-mail from Rod who does advocational archæology and has excavated 3 different known NWMP sites, and has stated he has found these buttons at all three sites. He theorizes that the NWMP who pulled the cannons wore these buttons.
